Staying Healthy During Flu Season & COVID-19
As if we haven’t had enough to worry about over the last 8 months with COVID-19, flu season is here! In the United States, flu season falls during fall and winter. For the states that have colder winter temperatures, flu season can hit a lot harder than more southern states that see warmer weather.
As most people already know, COVID-19 and Influenza are both highly contagious respiratory illnesses, even though they are caused by different viruses. There are some key differences between the flu and COVID-19. COVID-19 spreads more easily than the flu and can take longer before people show symptoms. Another big difference is that there is a vaccine for the flu, while the COVID-19 vaccine is still in production.
The telltale signs of the flu are fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, sore throat, and muscle aches, which are like the symptoms of COVID-19 with the addition of loss of taste and smell.
Since we are entering the flu season while still being mid-pandemic, we recommend a few tips for staying healthy and safe!
- Wash your hands frequently
- Wipe down surfaces around you
- Keep your distance from people who are sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Stay hydrated
- Get enough sleep
- Exercise
Along with the tips listed above, you should continue to socially distance and stay home if you are feeling sick. If you must go somewhere and be around people, be sure to wear a mask. Following all these steps might feel like an inconvenience, but if we all do our part, we will all have a better chance of staying healthy during this flu season. You should follow the guidelines provided by the CDC, as well as speak to your doctor if you are feeling sick.
