What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

For the large number of benefits that it affords, travel insurance isn’t as commonly used as you would expect. It makes sense to not want to add extra costs onto trips, especially expensive ones, but that’s also why travel insurance is most beneficial. Without travel insurance coverage, you could be stuck with unexpected extra costs or the consequences of delays and cancellations. Here are the many ways that travel insurance can save you money and keep your trip on track.

What is covered by travel insurance?

·       Baggage delay or loss – If your luggage is lost, damaged, or stolen, you’ll be reimbursed for the suitcase and the items within it. If your baggage is delayed for more than a certain amount of hours, you’ll be reimbursed for any essentials you have to buy. This generally kicks somewhere in between 6 to 24 hours of delay depending on your plan.

·       Missed connection – If your flight or boat is delayed and it causes you to miss a connecting flight or boat, you’ll be reimbursed the cost of catching up to it at the next destination.

o   Trip delay – If your flight is delayed, you’ll be reimbursed for meals and lodging purchased while waiting.

·       Medical evacuation, death, or dismemberment – Should an emergency happen that causes you to need medical evacuation, transportation will be covered. You’re also covered for accidental death or dismemberment, with death from natural causes, illness, or suicide not being covered.

·       Trip cancellation – For a number of covered reasons for cancellation, you can have otherwise nonrefundable fees covered. Reasons usually include:

o   Natural disaster

o   Financial insolvency or loss of employment

o   Bad weather

o   Military or jury duty

o   Sickness or death in the family

o   Stolen passport

o   Airline strike

Extras you can add onto travel insurance

While they cost a bit more, depending on your circumstances these extras can be very useful.

·       Rental car collision damage – You’ll be protected from the costs of a stolen or damaged rental car.

·       Pre-existing health conditions – To be covered for medical evacuation, death, or dismemberment due to pre-existing conditions, you’ll have to pay the extra fee.

·       Cancellation for any reason – With this add on, your reason for cancellation doesn’t have to fit the covered reasons in order to get reimbursed.

What isn’t covered by travel insurance?

·       Injuries under the influence – If you’ve drank or taken drugs, costs associated with injuries or death are no longer covered.

·       Named storms – If you purchase travel insurance to a place predicted to be hit by a named storm, you will not be covered. However, if you purchase the insurance before the storm is named, you will still be covered.

·       Extreme sports – When participating in an extreme sport, you assume responsibility for any injuries. If you’re injured during an extreme sport, costs will not be covered.

·       Medical tourism – If you’re traveling for the purpose of having a medical procedure done, your medical costs will not be covered.

·       Pregnancy – Similar to the named storms rule, if you cancel a trip due to pregnancy and you bought travel insurance after becoming pregnant, you won’t be reimbursed. If you purchase travel insurance before becoming pregnant, you will be reimbursed for cancellation.
